"It has started from the days in Shefield"

How to engage smokers who have little intention to quit smoking in order to have them get interested in quitting? Dr. Kano and I had been thinking about it for a long time when we encountered MI in 2007. Since then we have been studying MI through books, DVDs and attending workshops. We have been trying to practice MI in our clinical setting and trying to convey what we had learned to our coworkers and those who want to learn MI. It was natural for us to begin to want to attend TNT (Training of New Trainers) and become MINT members. In 2010 we took part in TNT held in Sheffield, UK. TNT gave us many things far more than we had expected. In the first place, we had a lot of fun! The way they conducted training, friendly atmosphere and everything overwhelmed us. At the last night of the training in the hotel room, Dr. Kano told me that he would like to hold the same kind of workshop in Japan. I was surprised to hear that. But I soon agreed with him and we held the first 3day Intensive MI-WS in Yokohama in December 3 months after coming back to Japan. We were very surprised and happy because many people participated in the WS with such a short notice. The second 3day Intensive MI-WS is coming in Nagoya in January 2013. Nine members who attended the first 3day Intensive MI-WS is going to attend it as facilitators. We believe that it is important for those who learn MI to continue to study. Therefor the members who studied in the intensive workshop together are precious fellows to enhance and encourage each other. Moreover, we believe that not only being taught but guiding and coaching somebody else are important because we can grow through teaching others. We dream that this kind of mutual help in learning MI keeps growing in Japan. We are going to start MINF (Motivational Interviewing Network of Facilitators) in January 2013 drawing MINT as a model. According to MI-3 p377, from its inception MI has been organic, emerging, and evolving. MINF is going to promote quality in MI practice and training.
